Why a POC PIO is More than Just the Face of the School District
Wednesday, November 15, 2023 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (PST)
Description
Conference Call Back - Highly Rated 2023 Conference Session:
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the racial and ethnic makeup of the public relations industry in the U.S. in 2020 includes 91.0% white, 4.3% African American, 2.3% Asian American, and 7.6% Hispanic or Latino. A Public Information Officer is a leader, the face of the school district, and a leader that all stakeholders rely on to convey information or lead with a calm force. A POC PIO carries more responsibilities that includes representing all marginalized groups, being a role model, and inspiring all minority groups that they stand a chance to pursue their dreams.
This session will aim to draw attention to the responsibility and unique power that School Public Relations Professionals have to bring about change and prove that representation matters when it comes to equity and diversification. The session will also invite audience members to share their experiences and their solution-based approaches to alter these alarming statistics.
The aim of the session is to encourage all professionals to continue this dialogue in each of their school districts and identify unique ways in which the cause of diversification in School PR can be furthered.
