Suitable for new or seasoned pros, and for those with or without advanced cameras or editing software, this session is focused on student photo/media releases and privacy-sensitive photography. Attendees will learn to craft effective releases, why releases are integral to any communications project, and will receive a customizable template suitable for a school, district, or county office.


We'll delve into the ethical and legal aspects, including the CA Education Code, regarding student and family privacy and explore strategies for dealing with denied or unknown parental/guardian consent while still capturing compelling images. We’ll touch on keeping track of permissions and best practices for recordkeeping. We'll explore photography and editing tactics that maintain student and family privacy when consent isn't given and gain insights on photographing particularly sensitive events such as free resource giveaways or foster/unhoused student events.

About the Presenter:


Rebecca Maschack (she/her) is a dedicated school public relations professional with three years of LEA communications experience. She currently serves as a multimedia communications specialist at Redlands Unified School District and previously worked at a county office of education, giving her a well-rounded skill set. While initially pursuing a teaching credential, Rebecca shifted her focus and is now working towards a bachelor’s degree in strategic communications at California State University, San Bernardino. She is best known for her unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Rebecca spends her free time going on adventures with her wife and spoiling her “half-ton son,” a 21-year-old horse.
