SUMMARY:The California Public Records Act: Responding To Requests for Electronic Records (Conference Call Back - Highly Rated 2025 Conference Session)
DESCRIPTION:Districts continue to receive California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests with increased frequency with requesters turning their focus to emails and information contained in databases. This workshop will include an overview of the CPRA and the limits on requests\, specifically in the area of electronic records as well as strategies for minimizing the burden on districts while complying with the law. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss some of the developing areas of the law\, including requests for records maintained on private accounts and mobile devices. About the Presenter: William B. Tunick is a Shareholder in the firm's San Francisco office and Chair of the firm's Board Ethics\, Transparency and Accountability (BETA) and Litigation Practice Groups. His practice focuses on elections\, governance issues\, and representing school districts in a variety of state and federal litigation. As part of a broader governance practice\, he counsels clients on potential conflicts of interest and provides training on the rules regarding gifts and how to avoid conflicts of interest in contracting. This part of his practice also includes advising clients on the open-meeting requirements of the Brown Act\, handling public record requests under the California Public Records Act\, and navigating the school district re-organization process.
