SUMMARY:Building Community Through Student-Centered Events (Conference Call Back - Highly Rated 2026 Conference Session)
DESCRIPTION:How can an event become a catalyst for building stronger community connections\, advancing student opportunities\, and creating lasting advocates for your schools? In this session\, participants will explore ways to design events that go beyond celebration\, turning them into strategic communications platforms that amplify student voice\, engage the broader community\, and inspire meaningful calls to action. The session will also highlight how events can act as catalysts for family and community engagement\, providing FACE teams with powerful opportunities to connect with families and advance equity and inclusion. We will look at a case study of how Solano County Office of Education reimagined its Red-Carpet Film Premiere to elevate student voices while advancing a broader communications strategy. The event was recognized with an NSPRA Golden Achievement Award\, a reflection of the students\, families\, partners and staff who made the event meaningful and enahnced student outcomes.About the Presenters: Jennifer Leonard serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Communications and Emergency Management at Solano County Office of Education. She oversees the Public Information Office and leads initiatives spanning branding\, digital media\, community partnerships\, and emergency communications. Jennifer holds a Public Information Specialist Certificate from Cal OES and applies her training in SEMS and crisis communication to support schools\, administrators and colleagues in Solano County.Karin Sturgis is the Graphic Media & Community Outreach Specialist for the Solano County Office of Education. With a strong background in visual communication\, photography and public engagement\, Karin plays a key role in creating impactful digital media to support educational initiatives and community outreach programs. She brings creativity and strategic insight to her role\, helping bridge the gap between schools and the community through effective visual storytelling.
