Chronic absenteeism is one of the most pressing challenges facing many California schools, with impacts on student achievement, district funding, and community trust. School PR professionals are uniquely positioned to address this challenge in partnership with Student Support and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support departments, using strategic, equity-driven communications.
This session will provide attendees with practical tools and strategies to:
*Frame attendance as a shared community responsibility.
*Use inclusive, culturally responsive messaging to connect with diverse families.
*Leverage social media, video, and digital platforms to highlight why students enjoy coming to school, what they miss when they’re absent, and to celebrate successes while delivering timely reminders about the importance of attendance.
*Equip principals and staff with consistent, easy-to-use samples messaging, collateral material templates, and talking points.
*Partner with community organizations, local businesses, and city/county agencies to reduce barriers and support families.
Through real-world examples and interactive discussion, participants will leave with adaptable campaign templates, sample messages, and engagement strategies that can be scaled for small, mid-sized, or large districts.
Presenters: Marci McFadden, PK Diffenbaugh, Alan Crawford (Monterey Peninsula USD)
